Gwynn’s Island was first discovered by Hugh Gwynn in 1611 when he was exploring that area of the Chesapeake Bay. As the story goes, when Gwynn landed on the island, he heard an Indian girl crying because she had fallen out of her canoe. Supposedly the Indian girl was none other than Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan.
The story goes on to say that she was so grateful to Gwynn for saving her that she gave the Island to him. The story is probably a legend, but by 1640, Hugh Gwynn was granted 1,000 acres of the Island for himself from King Charles 1st of England.
